79% of global fortune 100 companies use social media; European companies love Twitter and Facebook
As a follow-up to the US Fortune 100 study released last year, Burson-Marsteller’s latest research looks into how global Fortune 100 companies are using social media. It is the 1st in a series of evidence-based studies to be released in 2010.
Let’s look at the some of the most interesting findings from a European perspective.
79% of the Global Fortune 100 are using at least 1 of the social media elements considered – Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and corporate blogs. European companies seem to be especially open to including social media platforms into their communication mix. 88% of the European companies are using at least one of these social platforms channels. This figure is only 50% for Asian companies.

So, what is the social media platform of choice among global Fortune 100 companies? The winners are Twitter and Facebook. These results are similar to the already mentioned US Fortune 100 Study from 2009. With the rocket-like rise of Twitter and the continued success of Facebook around the world, corporate blogging has lost its appeal for global companies.

We have received a lot of attention and comments on our study. Erin Byrne, Chief Digital Strategist at Burson-Marsteller, wrote a blog post answering some of the questions we got after the study had been launched.
