Brief
Deliver a winning campaign for the Free Democratic Party for the German Bundestag elections in September 2009 to maximise their share of the vote
Strategy & Implementation
As lead-agency for the party Burson-Marsteller created the campaign architecture and provided strategic advice, engaged in media relations and used online communications e.g. initiated the first ever live chat with Guido Westerwelle on a popular German online platform myvideo.de.
Results
After 11 years in opposition, the German Liberal Party re-emerged as the big winner of the 2009 Federal Election and as member of a new centre-right government under Chancellor Merkel. It was the biggest success in the party’s history with 15% of the vote – up from 10 % four years earlier. The number of party members grew from 66,000 to 72,000 during the campaigning period.
