About us

Our Heritage

“Our most significant defining moment: establishing a Burson-Marsteller presence in Europe.”
Harold Burson

Established in 1953, Burson-Marsteller has its roots in a one-employee business following a breakfast meeting between Harold Burson and Bill Marsteller in New York in 1946.  In 1961, the first European office was established in Geneva. By the 1980s we had offices across Western Europe and had already grown our footprint in the Middle East and emerging markets. By 1983, we became the world’s largest public relations firm. Today, Burson-Marsteller in Europe, Middle East and Africa has a network of 27 offices and more than 80 additional markets covered by affiliates and their networks.  We’re number 1 in many markets and top 3 in most. Burson-Marsteller is a part of WPP (NASDAQ: WPPGY), one of the world’s leading communications services networks.

Our heritage is defined by other milestones. We were one of the first agencies to integrate digital and social media campaigns into our client work. Our crisis communications continues to set the standard for the industry. We’re driving an Evidence-Based approach to developing and implementing strategies and campaigns so that we’re sure of the impact we can deliver for our clients. Finally, our products are the best in their class and have been proved to deliver better results for our clients.
